What Is Involved in a Foreclosure?

Once you fall behind in your mortgage payments, usually 3-4 months, your lender will file a lawsuit to foreclose on your home. Your lender hopes that you, like many others, will give up, fail to speak with an attorney and not respond. Your lender can then seek a quick summary judgment. If they prevail, your home will be sold on the courthouse steps in as little as 4-6 months.

You are entitled to a fair process and to your day in court. By hiring an attorney and responding timely, you can keep your options open, perhaps for many more months. You can stay in your home during the fight and avoid the expense of moving or paying expensive rents you cannot afford.
